Emma Currie is a painter and illustrator living and working in Melbourne, Australia. Emma’s
distinctive style explores both abstraction and figurative motifs through the use of geometric colour
blocking. Through carefully thought out compositions, she depicts the female form in scenes that
are both fluid and contained, seeking to explore the ever evolving concept of modern womanhood.
‘Fold’ reflects on the politics of taking up space. The woman depicted is restricted to the frame of
the canvas, with only her very edges making it off the frame. She is forced to contort to fit within
the bounds of the tightly defined space in which she is contained. This piece communicates a
sense of powerlessness inherent to people who identify as women who are taught to shrink, to accommodate, to create space by making themselves as small as possible.
